Paver walkway with a granite landing step leading to a brick home

Home / Walkways & Steps

Walkways and steps across Greater Boston

The first thing anyone walks on. Built flat, safe in the rain and squared to the house.

What we do

Every visit to your house starts here

A walkway takes more abuse than any other surface on the property. Foot traffic, snow shovels, plow edges, road salt, and the freeze and thaw cycle working on it every single winter. It is also the piece everyone looks at from the street.

We set walks on the same base we use for a patio, hold a consistent width off the house line, and keep the risers on entry steps even from the first to the last. Uneven risers are the reason people trip on a set of stairs, so we lay them out on paper before anything is cut.

Our standard

How we build it

Included

Everything under walkways & steps

One crew from the excavation to the final sweep, so nothing gets lost between trades.

Front walkways

The main approach from the driveway or street, in paver, bluestone or cobble, with a border that keeps the line crisp.

Granite steps

Solid granite treads set on a compacted base, the standard around here for an entry that never moves.

Bluestone landings

Thermal bluestone landings and treads, dry laid or set on concrete, for a flat surface that lasts.

Side and garden paths

Stepping stone runs and narrow service paths connecting the front to the back yard without cutting through the lawn.

Stoops and entries

Rebuilding failed concrete stoops in stone, including the wing walls and rail posts.

Mailbox and post bases

Granite mailbox posts and stone bases set plumb and deep enough to stay that way.

How we work

From first call to final walk

Step 01

On site walkthrough

We look at the grade, the drainage and the access, take measurements and talk through material and color options with samples.

Step 02

Written estimate

Scope, base depth, material, square footage and price, in writing, so you can compare it line by line against anyone else.

Step 03

Build and final walk

We excavate, build, clean up daily, then walk the finished job with you and go over how to care for it.

Questions

What homeowners ask us

How wide should a front walkway be?

Four feet lets two people walk side by side and suits most homes. We go wider on larger houses and long approaches, and narrower on a tight side path. We mark it out on site so you can see it before we dig.

Are granite steps worth it over poured concrete?

In this climate, yes. Solid granite has no seams to fail and no surface to spall from salt. A concrete stoop typically needs work within fifteen years. Granite outlives the house.

Can you fix the walkway I already have?

Often, yes. If the stone is in good shape and only a section has settled, we can lift it, rebuild the base and reset the same material. If the base was never right, rebuilding is the cheaper answer over time.

Will the new walk be slippery in winter?

We keep a slight forward pitch on treads so water drains instead of pooling, and recommend surfaces with texture at entries. Bluestone and granite both give good footing when they are set to drain.
